Deaf Ministry
OC Deaf Ministry in Orange County California is home at Christ Our Savior Catholic Parish in Santa Ana. You are able to find on our platform Catholic Churches doing California Deaf ministry. You can find such churches on the Mass and Confessions page. OC Deaf and hard of hearing ministry is growing. Deaf Christians are returning to the true Church of Christ. We are glad. Subsequently, we are taking up the mantle to offer sacramental preparation to suit the needs of the faithful. However, we are still searching on behalf of Christ for more souls. Deaf Outreach is best done when Deaf reach Deaf. In a few years time considering the growth rate we see we will be the biggest California Deaf Church.
California Deaf Ministry
California is a big state. There are a lot of churches in California. Though not many have an extensive Deaf program. In California there are a number of churches that have a full scale religious program tailored for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
In the archdiocese of San Francisco Fr. Paul Z. is pastor at St. Benedict’s parish. He has been pastor for more than a decade serving the Deaf there. He is a Deaf pastor leading the Deaf. In the Archdiocese of Los Angeles at Holy Angels parish Fr. Tom S. leads the Deaf flock. Deaf outreach in Los Angeles really strong because at Holy Angels it is a personal parish for the Deaf and Hard of hearing.
The Diocese of Orange is shepherded by a number of priests. A couple of them know enough sign language to hear confessions, preach, communicate in ASL. The other priests have been attached with the Deaf community for decades now. They are faithful in their service to satisfy the spiritual needs of many.
OC Ministry
The OC Deaf and hard of hearing ministry has it’s own Facebook page and this website to promote our presence in the Greater Los Angeles, Orange County, San Bernardino, and San Diego area. Over the years each Deaf parish in all of these areas have frequently met and done retreats together to foster greater unity amongst leaders and the faithful.
We are proud to announce that we have the only ASL mass finder in the nation, maybe even the world. You are able to find for example, the mass times our Deaf community by clicking our location on the map. And if you know of any other parishes that need to be on the map contact us.
Religious Education
The Diocese of Orange in California offers religious education for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Our Sacramental religious preparation program is in American Sign Language. Our parishioners are Deaf, Deafblind, Hard of hearing, and hearing. We support those with disabilities who know American Sign Language. Our community supports those who have family members who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. We offer ASL and deaf culture classes as needed.
The demographic population in California is ethnically mixed, but this truly enriches our faith community. We respect and honor ethnic cultural traditions all the while advocating for Jesus Christ and His Church. Our approach to education is to assess each person to see which kind of instructional method will most likely work. For some it is strictly 1:1, for others it is in a group setting. We create individual education plans upon request or need. Everyone is different and has different aptitudes for learning. We get it.
Program
Our program meets weekly on Sunday before or after mass. Our schedule is posted and given to parents, sponsors, and those participating usually in the fall. We committed to the teachings of the church and follow a lengthy process of formation. Why so long? Because, to withstand and deter evil in this world takes time, training, and discernment. Discipleship is life-long. There is no end. A few initial years in our eviternal existence is nothing in comparison to the big picture.
Be assured that we will cover pressing dogmatic and moral theological questions. Yes, we methodically answer the tough themes, questions, and objections that the devil would like all of us to believe. The difficulty, opportunity, and treasure is to know why all of the Catholic Churches teachings promise happiness, joy and fulfillment. Contrary to popular and sinful rationale of our time does the Church offer answers to make us happy, or happy again.
Join
Join our community by registering. We keep in contact with email, newsletters, and blog/vlog posts. Retreats are frequently requested because we seek the Lord and vice-versa. We have retreat offerings for only men and only women and coed as they appear.
Our bread and butter program deals with sacramental preparation. We offer First Communion, Confirmation 1 & 2, RCIA, and baptism classes for parents and Godparents.
Church
Why come to church at all? Going to church is a safe harbor for our soul. God overshadows the church to allow us to rest in him. It is a place and time to be one together. Outside the church is disunity and chaos. God our creator, protector, and shepherd soothes our being. He gives us exactly what we need, Him!
We are created to know, and our intellect never stops inquiring about things, let alone God. Our religious education program aims to reveal God’s saving plan for all of us and prepares souls to receive him via the sacraments.

Orange County Deaf Church in the Catholic-Christian tradition was founded years before 1976. This is because before the Diocese of Orange was erected, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles covered all of Orange County. Once our diocese was officially launched the Deaf attended the same churches but under a different bishop. The faith, community, and ministry all being the same. We continue handing down the faith tradition from one generation to the next in American Sign Language (ASL). Our faith community is a beacon in California and in the United States. We continue to thrive despite all odds and adversities thrown at us.
Orange County Deaf Church
We value belonging in our faith community. Our communal relationship with one another is what matters. Moreover, our relationship with Jesus Christ is paramount. Being in a melting pot of cultures, we are a mixed cultural community yet with the same Lord and shepherd leading us. Jesus Christ holds us together as one people after his own heart. He gives us his welcome and fellowship. This is why we have and continue to have a stable and strong Deaf community.
Our focus on faith
Our faith in the Lord is second to none. We believe that the gift of faith is unique and must be preserved all our life long. No matter the external obstacles or persons who wish ill to try our faith, do we ever cling to our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the Lord of Lords and King of Kings. Our Lord is good to reveal what happens to the good and just. He tells us that in psalm 34:19 “Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but the Lord delivers him out of them all.” RSV
We thank our bishops for supporting our Catholic Orange County Deaf Church. We salute them for funding this website through the pastoral services appeal. The pastoral services appeal raises money needed ministries and operations throughout the diocese. Without the generous benefactors throughout the diocese this new site would not have been able to happen.
With many people visiting our site and contacting us constantly we plan to address your questions, comments, and ideas for the future. The sky is the limit as to our Deaf outreach ministry. We are here to bring Jesus Christ to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in our diocese and beyond. If we are only able to introduce Jesus Christ in our online ministry to then lead others to their nearest Deaf church, mission accomplished.

ASL and Interpreting students are welcome in our congregation. We ask that if you are interested in being part of our community that you be a practicing Catholic. This condition being met enables you to interpret and assist in Deaf ministry if you are called to it. Livescan, fingerprinting, and a thorough background check is required for volunteers per diocesan policy. It is a lot of work to volunteer but it is worth it.

The definition of the word “catholic” is universal. ASL is short for American Sign Language. You can find a church universally in sign language almost anywhere in the word. Check it out!

ASL Church
A big component of any Deaf Church is the use of American Sign Language. This includes parents of Deaf children. Family members of the Deaf are in most ways obligated to know ASL anyways. Language within any culture is cherished or sacred. It is the language that they relate to God and the manner in which they yearn to know God through.
We realize that many have relatives that are Deaf and do not yet know ASL. Attending our services, retreats, and other public gatherings increases your language receptivity skills. “Little by little” as the idiom goes. In no time our Deaf community will support you in your ASL language quest. Over a couple years you will be up-to-speed and converse fluently in Sign Language.
Catholic American Sign Language
In addition to already being fluent in ASL or if you are learning the language you will find that there are different signs for biblical terms. Yes, nearly every Christian denomination has it’s own version of biblical terms. Why? Because the signs used denotes the underlying theology. i.e. Catholic American Sign Language signs will be different than most protestant or baptist churches. Some Christian ASL signs are the same i.e. “sin”. What is more interesting is the differences between national Catholic sign languages. For example, the Catholic ASL sign for God is a bent open-B arching above the head with your dominant hand. In Italy, LIS is the sign language use there. For God, it is simply the index finger of your dominant hand pointed upward. International Catholic sign language signs are different but, underlying the same theology.
What is even more odd or confusing is to find non-denominational churches using the same signs other non-American Catholic countries are using. For example, non-denominational Christian American Sign Language for a term may be the index finger pointed upward like the Catholics in Italy do. But the question remains as to whether their notion or understanding of the triune God is the same. Interesting huh? Welcome to the Church! At any rate we welcome you to our ASL Church.

Deaf Ministry – Eucharistic Miracles – ASL. Eucharistic Miracle Rome, Italy Rome #1 in ASL.
~”This miracle occurred in Rome, Italy in 595. A faithful woman made the bread to be used at Mass and gave it to her church for the Consecration. Pope St Gregory the Great was celebrating the Mass, and while he was distributing Holy Communion, the faithful woman was standing in line along with other people and she heard the Pope saying “Body of Christ”. She laughed aloud, and the Pope stopped her and asked her to explain her behavior. Deaf Ministry – Eucharistic Miracles – ASL. She explained that she could not believe that the bread that she had made, had truly become the Body and Blood of Christ. Pope St Gregory refused to give her Communion and he prayed and begged God to help her to understand the truth about the Consecration and the bread and wine becoming the Body and Blood of Christ. [Deaf Ministry – Eucharistic Miracles – ASL] After he finished his prayers, he saw the consecrated Host become Flesh and Blood. The woman repented and knelt on the ground crying. Currently the miracle is preserved in a relic at the Benedictine monastery in Andechs, Germany. You can visit and see the miracle. I don’t know why they preserved it in Germany instead of Rome.
