OC Catholic

Welcome to the OC Catholic Deaf community. Our community is composed of Orange County Catholic Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and hearing persons. Our OC Catholic Deaf community has a rich history. In the early years of our Orange County diocese the Deaf community was present. In fact, the Deaf were present in the archdiocese of Los Angeles. So, the southern California Catholic Deaf community has always had a home in Orange.

What we believe: We profess in our parishes with one familial voice in our Creed that we are One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. As the Second Vatican Council prayed, “Christ is the light of humanity; and it is, accordingly, the heart-felt desire […] that, by proclaiming his Gospel to every creature, [we] may bring to all men that light of Christ which shines out visibly from the Church,” Catechism of the Catholic Church, 748. Our mission as your local Diocese is to do just that. Learn more about our beliefs as Catholics here.

Come explore our Catholic Social Teachings by visiting our Life, Justice, and Peace webpage here.

If the Lord is calling you out of the boat and inviting you into the Catholic Church, please click here to locate a Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) program at your local parish.

We applaud their continued love to God and service to us. The Diocese of Orange Catholic Deaf Community is grateful every week for your work and message. We thank you this week for the ASL Gospel 3rd Sunday Year C.

Deaf House of Character

Deaf House of Character

Holy Week in the Catholic Church is an important time of year. We contemplate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ. We journey with him in Jerusalem to see him arrested, questioned, beaten, scourged, take up the cross, and die for us. Every ounce of life in him gives testimony to the truth. The truth he utters is born of love. Our Lord’s love perpetually flows from his heart and actions. It stems from the triune Godhead: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus’ life is a life of character. So we need to discern whether our Deaf house of character stems from our Lord or not.

We can reflect upon a few questions together as the week progresses. First and foremost, Do I know the 10 commandments? Do I follow the 10 commandments? Do I frequent the sacraments often? Have I received absolution of my sins from a priest this Lent? Do I love others in the same fashion that our Lord loves us? Do we treat others harshly? Am I grateful to others? Have I expressed thanks by saying thank you this past week? Do I say thank you to God for my life? Do I thank Jesus for giving me the way of life to follow?

Holy Week is very special. It is a sacred time of year and we extend our invitation to you to join our worship services. The Diocese of Orange Catholic Deaf Community strives to promote a Deaf House of Character.

Scriptures in Sign Language | 2nd Sunday of Lent

Members of the mystical body of Christ are producing the Scriptures in Sign Language. ASL Catholic Media and the Archdiocese of Washington do a terrific job transliterating. Signing the Scriptures in ASL is a great way to evangelize.

Scriptures in Sign Language.Scriptures in ASL

Fr. Mike Depcik offers his gospel reflection explaining the scriptures in sign language. He has been spreading the gospel in many media outlets for years. He also travels near and far to reach Deaf and Hard of Hearing Catholic Communities. Because of his zealous spirit he is kind of like or has become, a world wide shepherd to the Deaf. May God bless him abundantly!

Thanking those who Deaf ministry in the Church ought be done more often. Particularly, ASL Catholic Media and ADW Deaf and Disabilities ministry. Why is this? Well, because every Catholic Church interpreter now has a resource of what their job should look like in ASL. But not only do interpreters are to thank these mentioned ministries, but every lector who signs the scriptures in ASL. The above ministries spend hours of their time to ensure the gospel message is dynamically equivalent to the printed text. If the scriptures in sign language is calling you to be your next ministry please contact them.

Lent preparation in ASL

Lent preparation in ASL is given to us by ASL Catholic Media in partnership with St. Jose Maria Institute. The theological depth and richness of St. Jose Maria’s institute is shared with us in ASL. What a blessing! You don’t need to leave your house to attend and watch these podcasts. We are so blessed to have these Catholic resources available to us. Lent in Sign Language is a term that google search results do not show much Catholic listings. And so, this episode of a Lent ASL Teaching Resource breaks the barrier. We hope to get the Catholic vibe of lent in ASL out there! #Lent ASL Catholic.

If you would like to contact ASL Catholic Media and give them a donation for the amount of time they have given us for Lent preparation in ASL, find them here. Lent in Sign Language is not often preached on. To be more clear this is a great Lent ASL Teaching Resource. Hopefully, more and more will be inspired to get the word out in ASL about the resurrection and all that happens during the season of lent.
